Director of Planned and Major Giving

Baltimore, MD

Executive Summary

Catholic Charities of Baltimore (CCOB) seeks a talented and highly experienced leader to serve as its Director of Planned and Major Giving. The Director is responsible for the planning, implementation, and management of major and planned giving fundraising efforts to maximize philanthropic support and will directly manage one Major Gift Officer.

CCOB is a nonprofit organization committed to providing care and services to improve the lives of Marylanders in need and to make the community better. With 80 charitable service programs in 200 locations across Baltimore City and Baltimore, Harford, Howard, Carroll, Anne Arundel, Frederick, Washington, and Garrett counties of Maryland, CCOB provides care for more than 160,000 people a year. A permanent staff of approximately 2,000, supported by nearly 8,000 volunteers, serves children and families, people living in poverty, individuals with intellectual disabilities, immigrants, and seniors.

The work of Catholic Charities in the United States was begun by John Carroll, the first Bishop of Baltimore, when he declared in 1792 that a portion of all parish revenues be set aside “for the relief of the poor.” In 1923, the agency was incorporated by organizing the 12 previously separate Catholic services throughout the Archdiocese under a common mission. This initiative increased efficiency, consolidated efforts among services, and fostered innovation in meeting the needs of those in the community—characteristics that remain the hallmark of Catholic Charities.

Catholic Charities started as a charity-based service model, providing works of mercy to meet people’s immediate basic needs such as food and shelter. Over the next century, CCOB expanded its services beyond these immediate needs by assisting with more enduring solutions such as permanent housing, employment, and behavioral health. In the 1970s, CCOB became an innovator in developing programs for people with developmental disabilities. In the 1980s, CCOB expanded to include programs for poor, homeless, and unemployed people and began evolving into one of Baltimore’s largest providers of services for seniors. In 2007, Catholic Charities opened the Daily Bread Employment Center, Maryland’s largest hot meal program, for people who need not only food but assistance and guidance to achieve long-term employment and housing.

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Director of Planned and Major Giving will be responsible for the planning, implementation, and management of major and planned giving fundraising efforts to maximize philanthropic support. The Director will directly manage one Major Gift Officer.

The Director will have a bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or a related field. A minimum of 10 years of experience with planned and major gifts, and at least 3 years of management experience with the ability to lead and motivate teams is required.
